MHz: Looks like I won't be getting up this way any time soon. Sad to see a cache that I have formal written permission to place here go, but it's now too far away to maintain. Thanks to all who found it! MHz

Geocache Description:

This cache is an ammo can with trade items themed around this historic event. The track at this location is jointly used by several motor sports related clubs but it was the Winnipeg Sports Car Club who were here the day the Gimli Glider landed.

The Gimli Glider is a Boeing 767 Passenger Jet operated by Air Canada that ran out of fuel on July 23, 1983 and needed a place to land. The pilot made a quick judgment and picked what he thought was an abandoned air strip at Gimli, MB to land. Little did he know that the air strip had been converted to part of a race track for various clubs including the Winnipeg Sports Car Club and that it was in use by the club at the time the jet set down. With people, campers and race cars everywhere, the jet was landed with no fatalities to the crew, passengers or the people on the ground and with only minor damage the plane.

Recently this Jet was retired and made it's last flight to it's final resting place in airplane heaven, in California's Mojave Desert in January 2008.

Congrats to MuStash for being FTF!

Cache was placed with kind permission by the Winnipeg Sports Car Club and the Gimli Industrial Development Group.
