LEG 1:
You are looking at a bench with a plaque commemorating the SS
Jeremiah O’Brien. The National
Liberty Ship Memorial website reports that the Jeremiah O’Brien
is one of two fully-restored operating survivors of 2,710 World War
II Liberty Ships. Of the ships that participated in the Normandy
invasions, it is the only ship to have returned fifty years later
to take part in the 50th anniversary of D-Day (June 6, 1994).
Listed on this plaque are the names of the crewmembers of that 50th
anniversary voyage.
Using the name of the last crewmember listed on this plaque,
determine the following quantities. For the sake of clarity,
consider 'Y' to be a consonant and not a vowel:
A = The number of consonants in the crewmember’s entire name
B = The number of vowels (A,E,I,O,U) in the crewmember’s first
name, squared
C = The number of pairs of double letters in the crewmember’s
entire name
D = The number of letters in the crewmember’s last name
E = The number of vowels in the crewmember’s entire name.
LEG 2:
N 37° 37.ABC
W 122° 29.DEE
You stand before an object. Associated with this object are
three four-digit numbers. Using the smallest of these numbers,
determine the following quantities:
XXX = The four-digit number minus 1127
YYY = The four-digit number minus 1264
LEG 3:
N 37° 37.XXX
W 122° 29.YYY
A simple request, from which to deduce the final cache
location.
Pacifica being a small town, this simple request has actually
sparked enormous controversy!
Determine these quantities:
K = The number of letters in the fourth word
L = The number of words in the request
M = The number of letters in the first two words
N = The number of letters in the longest word, times 2/3
P = The number of letters in the last word
Q = The number of adverbs in the request.
FINAL LEG:
Using the quantities determined in Leg 3, the coordinates for
the final cache are:
N 37° 37.KLM
W 122° 29.NPQ
This is an ammo box of typical dimensions. When placed, the
cache contained: Log book and pen, Star Trek New Frontier, Book
One, A Dance at the Slaughterhouse, by Lawrence Block; colorful
chard seeds, personal cassette player (archaic model, but believed
in working order), Disney stickers, heart glitter stickers, yellow
Fun Doh, two commandos, Old Glory toy, and strand of green
beads.
There is no bushwhacking required.
