A Speyside Way path along the River Spey with beautiful vistas.
The Speyside Way is an 100-mile hiking/cycling trail from the North Sea coast at Buckie to Newtonmore and is largely in view of the River Spey, Scotland’s second longest River. Planning is for the trail to be extended to the headwaters of the Spey.
As you pass through Balliefurth Farm note all the awards for eco friendly agriculture. There are great displays with pictures of flora and fauna of the area. This is a wonderful example of what farming SHOULD be.
Most of the section from Nethy Bridge to Grantown is on a railway abandoned in 1965. The line was built to accommodate the transport of whisky and agriculture produced in the area. In addition, it served as transportation from more rural areas to the High School in Grantown. There are wonderful stories about whisky poaching and the people who worked in the area.
