How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Involves a hike, a swim, a rock hop, and limited access.

I have wanted to place this cache shortly after I started geocaching and finally got around to it. I hope that you enjoy it, but please be careful.

This is an offset cache, and is located near the Ocoee Whitewater Center. Click Here if you are not sure how offset caches work. The first stage is in an area that is seldom visited. It is a favorite swimming hole of mine and a few other people who know about it. You can visit the area when there are hundreds, even bus loads, of people at the white water center and surrounding blue holes, and this place will often be void of people.

I considered giving no more information than what you have already read, but feared that no one would ever find the cache. So I will be kind and provide you some helpful and time saving information. It still won't be particularly easy, trust me.

The cache WILL NOT be accessible on Saturday or Sunday. This is because TVA releases the river at dam #3, which allows rafters and kayakers to have their thrill on the upper section of the river. Trying to find the cache during this time would be life threatening. The release is shut off at 4:30 PM, but it takes over 3 hours for the river level to return near its weekly level, and even then it is too cloudy to attempt hunting the cache.

TVA also makes unscheduled releases on this section of the river. They sound an alarm from the dam, but you may not hear it from here. So, if you here the water coming (and you will if you are there when it does), or if you start feeling the vibration, get out of the river immediately. Unscheduled releases do not happen very frequently, but it is still a good idea to have someone that is not underwater as a lookout.

Strongly recommended equipment to find this cache:

  • Non-slip shoes suitable for rock hopping.
  • Sunscreen
  • Swimming goggles (a mask would be much better)
  • A snorkel to enjoy the area and swim with the fish!
  • A friend - you don't want to get hurt, especially by yourself! And you may need help finding both stages :)

Please do not attempt to remove the first stage coordinates from their location. If you loose them I will expect help replacing them :)

Since this cache is above average difficulty I have stocked it with above average items. Please try and trade fair, and don't take all the good things. I have included a nice t-shirt for first finder size XL. If FTF would like the shirt but in a different size please email me and I will help to exchange it.

I highly recommend rock hopping up the river from the first stage to the cache. It is fun and beautiful. There are some really colorful rocks and nice pools along the way. I have hopped all 3 miles to the dam and back before. If you are not so inclined you may walk the Old Copper Road most of the way.

Give yourself plenty of time to find the cache and enjoy the area - half a day minimum. If you are in a big hurry you could probably finish the cache in an hour, but why not enjoy it?

Above all else, please be careful on the rocks!
