The Cudgel War started on the 25.11.1596 and ended on the 24.2.1597. During those three months almost three thousand people, 1,5 per cent of the population, lost their lives. The cache is located nearby memorial of battle of Nyystölä.
Nuijasota alkoi 25.11.1596 ja päättyi 24.2.1597. Näiden kolmen kuukauden aikana kuoli melkein kolme tuhatta ihmistä, eli 1,5 % kansakunnasta. Kätkö sijaitsee Nyystölän taistelun muistomerkin läheisyydessä.
The Cudgel War was fought in the area of Finland in the late 16th Century. At first glance the war may
look like an ordinary rebellion started by unsatisfied peasants. However there was much more to it. In
the background was the power struggle of two Swedish lordly figures: King Sigismund, who was
supported by the Finnish nobility, and Duke Carl, who encouraged the peasants to revolt,hoping to
ascend to the throne through rebellion. The war got its name from the spiked clubs that the peasants
used. Cudgels were the only effective weapon available to the peasants against the heavy armour of
the knights.
On 14th of January there was one of biggest battles in Padasjoki. About 400 pesants with crudgels
were on defence in Nyystölä. First they had a good positions in defence but then they made a mistake
by relying on opposite leader Iivari Tawast. Tawast made a promise for pesants that if they surrendered,
they could leave as free men. He did not keep his promise and he had all pesants killed.

1500-luvun lopulla käynnistyi Suomessa merkittävä kapina, Nuijasota. Ensi katsomalta sota vaikutti
tavalliselta kapinalta, joka alkoi epäsuotuisien olosuhteiden johdosta. Tilanne oli todellisuudessa paljon
vakavampi. Sodan osapuolina oli kaksi ruotsalaista lordia. Toinen oli Kuningas Sigismund, jota tuki
Suomen ylimystö. Toinen oli Kaarle Herttua, joka yllytti talonpoikia kapinaan. Hänellä oli tavoitteena
valtaistuimelle nouseminen sodan seurauksena. Sota sai nimensä nuijista, joita talonpojat käyttivät
taisteluissa aseina. Nuijat olivat ainoa tehokas talonpoikien käytettävissä oleva ase kuninkaan
sotavarustelua vastaan.
Padasjoella 14.1. käytiin yksi suurimmista taisteluista. Suunnilleen 400 nuijamiehen joukko asettui
puolustukseen Nyystölässä. Aluksi menestyksellisesti puolustautuneet nuijamiehet erehtyvät
luottamaan vastapuolen johtajan Iivari Tawastin lupaukseen, että he saisivat lähteä vapaasti.
Päällikkönsä käskystä Tawastin miehet surmaavat antautuneen kapinajoukon lähes viimeiseen
mieheen.
Kätkö on vähän suurempi kuin filmipurkki.
