Stats for my trip: 6.39 miles on the odometer, 3:22 total time,
2:33 moving time, 1017' total ascent -- and I gave up with 1.3
miles still to go to get to the end. I was exhausted when I was
done! Considerable bushwhacking even though there is an established
trail -- just overgrown from lack of use. Let's change that! Mostly
mustard plants, foxtails and sticker bushes. Didn't see any poison
oak the entire way -- or snakes, although I was worried they would
be hiding in the tall grass. You could seriously cheat on this one
and, even though the terrain rating would technically go up by
doing so, I would recommend considering it. Once you solve the
puzzle, make sure to check with me before going out there to make
sure you are really up for this adventure. It is quite a bit more
than just a stroll down an easy trail..... As for parking for the
overland approach, I found a spot where I could get completely off
the road with no visible signs prohibiting parking or trespassing
at approximately 32-51.266, 116-47.761. There were two (only two)
sections of chain link fence near by, and I squeezed my car onto a
patch of dirt in front of them. Don't know about Gecko Dad's coords
-- they seem to be pretty far off the road based on aerial
photos....
