How Geocaching Works
Waldo does some sight-seeing at Iowa State University
One of our favorite story book characters is Waldo, from the Where's Waldo books. It is always fun to imagine where Waldo might have gone.
Central Campus at Iowa State University is a popular place for weddings. Many are held next to the Campanile, a bell tower with 50 tuneful bells. Waldo could have easily been invited to one of these weddings. He might have also left a geocache and a puzzle for you to follow.
The coordinates on this web page point to a great place to park. Park on the top level.
When Waldo left his car, he noticed a sign.
He counted the number of sevens "7" in THE SIGN and arrived at the following formula for the first digit in the puzzle:
D = (number of sevens)
Waldo next went to THE CAMPANILE:
He noted the years of the classes which donated the Campanile and used them to arrive at the next part of the puzzle:
E = (year1 + year2 + year3 + C)/367
He wandered around until he found an intriguing SCULPTURE.
He counted the number stones that make up the sculpture and came up with this formula for the last number:
C= (number of stones in the sculpture)
A = C + D
B = C - D
