Anta de Cunha Baixa, é um dos dólmenes de maiores dimensões e mais
completos da época neolítica em Portugal e dos mais bem
conservados, situando-se a sua construção no Neolítico Médio. A
técnica de construção aqui utilizada é idêntica à que se verifica
nos monumentos do Alentejo e de outras regiões: os esteios
verticais são reforçados com a colocação de calços em cunha na
base, escoram-se uns aos outros e descarregam o peso sobre a
pedra-mestra.
Descrição:
Possui uma Câmara rectangular de 3m de largura e 3,20m de
altura, formada por 9 esteios, alguns fracturados ou incompletos.
Os da entrada são paralelos à pedra-mestra e bastante inclinados
para o interior. É coberta por amplo e espesso chapéu rectangular,
de vértices arredondados, com 4,5m de diâmetro. Corredor muito
longo bem diferenciado, de 7,20m, e altura de 1,40m, com entrada
orientada a SE.. Compõe-se de 8 esteios de cada lado, alguns
consolidados com gatos de ferro, a formar dois renques que alargam
na zona média e convergem ligeiramente em direcção à entrada
voltando a alargar. Os esteios são maioritariamente rectangulares,
havendo também alguns trapezoidais e triangulares na câmara. A meio
do corredor surge outro chapéu, um pouco menor que o primeiro, de
forma trapezoidal. Não há vestígios da mamoa que originalmente a
envolvia e cobria. O pavimento é regular e composto por pequenas
lajes graníticas. O comprimento total é de 10,40m. Nalguns esteios
há gravuras, ou vestígios, de fossetes e traços.
Está
classificado como monumento de interesse público desde
1910.
 
Curiosidade:
Foi
nesta Anta e este o cenário escolhido pelo conhecido Mágico
Português Luís de Matos, para executar uma ilusão transmitida em
directo pela TV, na qual foi enterrado vivo reaparecendo segundos
depois no topo do chapéu da Anta.
Acesso:
Na
A25 sair no nó de Mangualde e tomar a direcção de Gouveia (N232),
pouco depois de passar a estação de comboios de Mangualde vire à
direita para a Cunha Baixa. Já dentro da povoação vire novamente à
direita (junto a um pequeno cruzeiro) e 800 metros depois (N 40º
34.052' – W 007º 46.194') entre no estradão à direita e
estacione (N 40° 34.186 – W 007° 46.208') junto à ponte sobre
um pequeno ribeiro. Siga a pé até ao lugar da Orca ou Casa da
Moura.
Dizem por aqui, que ao entardecer ainda se sentem as almas
penadas daqueles que aqui foram colocados para um descanso, que
afinal… não foi eterno! Vá até lá e retroceda na
história...

The Dolmen of Cunha Baixa is one of the biggest and more
completed dolmens of the Neolithic period in Portugal, and it is
also one of the best preserved. Its construction dates back to the
Middle Neolithic Age. The construction technique used is identical
to the one used in Alentejo and in other regions, as well, The
vertical props are reinforced by the collocation of wedges in the
base, which holds up one another and that makes it discharge the
weight upon the chief-stone.
Description:
A
rectangular chamber composes it; it has got 9,84 feet, and has got
9 props, some of them are either fractured or uncompleted. The ones
at the entrance are parallels to the chief-stone and are bent to
the interior. A vast and thick rectangular hat, with round
vertices, covers it, and it has a diameter of 14.76 feet. The
corridor is very long and well distinguished, it has got 23.62 feet
long, and 4.59 feet height, the entrance is oriented to SE. There
are 8 props on each side; some are consolidated with iron cats,
forming two ranks that become larger in the middle zone converging
lightly to the entrance. The great majority of props inside the
chamber have a rectangular shape, but there are other props with
triangular or trapezoid shapes. Some props have engravings or signs
of traces. On the middle of the corridor there is another hat,
it’s a bit smaller than the first one, and it has a trapezoid
shape. There are no sign of the “mamoa” that originally
covered and involved it. The pavement is composed by small granites
flagstone what makes it so irregular. Its full length is 34.12
feet.
It
is officially designated as a public interest monument
since1910.
Curiosity:
This dolmen and this scenery were chosen by Luís de Matos,
the well-known Portuguese Magician, to perform an illusion
transmitted alive on TV. Luís de Matos was buried alive, and after
some seconds he reappeared on the top of the dolmen’s
hat.
How to get there:
On
the high-way A25, take the way out to Mangualde, than head to
Gouveia (N232), a bit after the Mangualde train station turn right
to Cunha Baixa. Once inside the village, turn right again (on the
intersection there is a cross-aisle) and about 874,89 yards after,
turn right again into a tarmac road (N 40º 34.052'
– W 007º 46.194') and park near the
bridge (N 40° 34.186
– W 007° 46.208'). Than, you will have to
keep on foot to the place known as “Orca” or
“Casa da Moura”.
People say that at dusk, it is possible to feel the spirits
of those that were buried here to rest in peace for all eternity,
but after all… it was not eternal. Visit the Dolmen of Cunha
Baixa and go back in history.
