Geocache Description:

A small click lock tupperware box located in sight of Oulton Hall.

Oulton Hall and estate were first owned by the Blayds family in the mid 18th century. The house was then left to John Caverley who landscaped the surrounding parkland. Caverly also commissioned Sir Robert Smirke to design a library and drawing room within the Hall. Caverly's other legacy was the building of a church in the estate grounds - the church we still see today.

After a significant fire in 1850, the Hall was remodelled with the addition of the Great Hall and Minstrel's Gallery.

However from this point forward the house and estate were to see a period of decline from its earlier glory. During World War One the Hall was utilized as a hospital and convalescence home for wounded soldiers. In 1925 the Hall and grounds were sold to the council who then used it as a mental hospital. In 1971 it was sold again, but sadly the new owner allowed the Hall to fall into disrepair.

In 1991 Outlon Hall was bought by a major hotel group who invested significant sums of money to restore and expansed into the current 5-star hotel it is today. Apparently this is the only 5-star hotel in Northern England.

The cache location isn't too far from the public path that closely follows the outer perimeter of Outlon Park. This path makes a pleasant walk though in places the path it isn't well marked and can be hard to follow.

Safe parking a short distance from the cache is available at nearby Rothwell Sports Centre at N 53° 44.664' W 1° 27.158' though please take care when crossing the busy A642. I would advise against parking on the A642 itself.
