Berwick Breeze Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Firth of Forth: The cache has indeed gone missing. In fact I am surprised it lasted so long. It’s not a great hiding place, though the location is fantastic. So I am archiving it.

Geocache Description:

North Berwick is a coastal town with a small harbour and sandy beaches. There are two nearby distinctive physical features - the 613ft volcanic crag North Berwick Law, which overlooks the town, (see East Lothian Quartet - Berwick Law) and the 315ft Bass Rock, offshore in the Firth of Forth, which is a nature reserve and nesting ground for over 100,000 gannets each summer. Boat trips round the Bass Rock are available. There has been a harbour in North Berwick since the 1100s and for the following 500 years this was the location of a ferry crossing to Earlsferry, near Elie, in Fife. The harbour was the ferry crossing point to Fife for pilgrims to worship the relics of St Andrew.

The award winning Scottish Seabird Centre is nearby, with a good cafe and toilets. St. Andrews Auld Kirk is right next to the Seabird Centre. It is here that Francis Stuart, Earl of Bothwell, gathered 200 witches in 1590 to raise the devil to help them kill James VI. It was claimed they were seen dancing on the green, summoning a storm in an attempt to bring about the death of the King by shipwreck off the coast of North Berwick.

It's likely that the cache site will be very busy in good weather, so please be discreet. It's worth walking right to the end of the rocky point along the path, but please be careful with young children.
