This cache is located on a portion of the remaining Cumberland and Oxford Canal that spanned from Sebago Lake to the Portland waterfront. Construction of the 18 +/- mile canal began in 1828 and was completed in 1830. To accommodate the elevation change of approximately 267 feet between the inlet at White’s Bridge and the ending point at Clark Street (now Thompson’s Point), Portland, the canal was designed with a pitch of 1 foot per mile and 27 locks. Much of the canal followed along the edge of the Presumscot River until it got to Saccarappa, now Westbrook, where the canal passed over land through Beaver Pond and on to Stroudwater. The towpaths that horses used to pull boats along the canal are still visible on much of the overgrown canal’s edge. The canal was lost to the advancement of railroads that began serving the area. However, the canal served as a means of transportation for 40 years.
