A atribuição do Topónimo CALHETAS deveu-se, provavelmente, à orografia da freguesia, que tem uma costa com recifes e rochas formidáveis.
Situada sobre uma rocha junto ao mar, na costa norte da ilha de S. Miguel, com área de 4,70 Km2, pertence ao Concelho da Ribeira Grande.
A Padroeira da freguesia é a Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, invocada pelos portugueses desde tempos imemoriais, para as suas arriscadas viagens. A freguesia dedica em honra da N.S.B.V, uma festa, no último fim-de-semana do mês de Setembro, durante 4 dias.
Esta freguesia tem o privilégio de se situar junto ao mar, com uma costa abrupta, onde estão inseridas as lindíssimas PISCINAS NATURAIS, conhecidas por “CALHAU DA FURNA” e "POCEIRÕES" onde o veraneante pode deleitar-se e banhar-se nas águas do Atlântico.
The assignment of the "Calhetas" toponym was probably due to the parish topography, which includes a nice coastline with reefs and rocks.

The patron Saint of the parish is Our Lady of "Boa Viagem" (NSBV), invoked by the Portuguese since immemorial times, on their risky journeys. The parish dedicates an yearly party in honor of NSBV, that lasts for 4 days, in the last week-end of September.
This parish has the privilege of being located by the sea, with a steep coast, with two gorgeous NATURAL POOLS, known as "CALHAU DA FURNA" and "POCEIRÕES" where the traveler can pamper himself in the Atlantic waters .
