How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

The object is to move this traveling cache to any one of the 36 parks, preserves, reservations and/or sanctuaries listed in the book entitled: Walks & Rambles in Westchester and Fairfield Counties

The cache is at Seth Low Pierrepont State Park in Redding, CT!

This is a cross-border geocaching community project masquerading as a traveling cache. As indicated below, this cache has now made two laps through almost all of the 22 parks in Westchester County and 13 in Fairfield County listed in the book. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to seek and find this cache. Even if you previously found this cache, you are allowed to log another find on this cache provided the cache is at a new location. Since this is a traveling cache, you are urged to take the cache with you. HOWEVER, before grabbing the cache, please READ and FOLLOW the rules listed below governing this cache. If you agree to adhere to such rules and do grab the cache, please leave behind some sign, whether a rock cairn (a stack of rocks) or sticks arranged as an "X" or as a teepee frame, as a sign that someone has been there and taken the cache and therefore there is no need to scour the area for the cache. Email me and/or log online as soon as possible that you have found and removed the cache in order that the cache may be disabled and others can be alerted not to search for it. That said, please check this page before you leave for your search to make sure the cache is still at the coordinates listed above.

After you get the cache home, go through the book, find a park that interests you (preferably one that has not yet been visited on this cache's Third Circuit), read about it, go explore it and scout out an interesting new hiding place for this cache. Please do not just hide the cache next to or near an existing cache in the location you have chosen. Please explore and find a new, interesting spot. After you have hidden the cache well in the new location, please email me with the new coordinates as well as other pertinent information such as terrain and difficulty ratings, park hours, park fees (if any), recommended parking coordinates, spoiler hint, etc. and I’ll update the cache page accordingly.

The cache consists only of the book, the standard geocaching.com notice and a pen and pencil. Please do not remove the book from the cache. Whether or not you decide to take the traveling cache with you, please log your find by writing your log in the margins of the pages for the park where you found the cache or, failing that, on the inside front or back covers of the book. This cache is open to all to participate, besides Westchester and Fairfield County geocachers.

Please do not leave, take or trade anything in the cache. There are no prizes in this cache and ideally it will remain that way. Nevertheless, feel free to drop travel bugs and/or geocoins or similar trackable travelers in this cache (if they will fit). (Edit: 8/4/13: Thanks to Ovaron for donating an ammo can for this cache).

* There are other cache(s) already at these locations

+ The cache must be placed within arms length of the trail!

Parks or preserves that have been stricken through have banned geocaching (last I heard). Please do not place this cache in those parks. Also, please note that Teatown and Rockefeller require permits!

The slash ("/") before a hider's name indicates the cache has visited that particular park/preserve on its Third Circuit. If there is no slash, that park/preserve would be a preferred spot to place this cache so it can complete its Third Circuit.

[7/27/15 EDIT]The continued existence of this grandfathered traveling cache depends on everyone following the rules laid down on this cache page, on the geocaching.com website as well as by the rules and regulations of the parks and preserves of Westchester and Fairfield Counties listed in the cache's book. Accordingly, before you undertake to grab this traveler and move it to a new park or preserve in the book, please know and follow the rules for this cache including:

DO NOT BRING THIS CACHE TO EVENTS;

DO NOT “HIDE” THIS CACHE IN PROXIMITY TO AN EVENT
(yes, that means no “hides” under the picnic table at an Event or anywhere else near an Event);

DO NOT PASS THIS CACHE AROUND YOUR CIRCLE OF GEO-FRIENDS (this includes sharing coordinates of where you have hidden the cache before the cache page is updated and enabled); and, most importantly,

DO NOT PLACE THIS CACHE IN ANY AREA THAT VIOLATES GEOCACHING POLICIES OR THE APPLICABLE LAND POLICIES OF THE PARK OR PRESERVES IN THE CACHE'S BOOK! If you are having difficulty complying with gc.com's placement rules due to cache density in some of the smaller preserves, please contact the CO.

Management reserves the right to delete, without notice, any Found It logs that, in Management's judgment, violate the rules governing this cache. This traveling cache has been enjoyed by the geocaching community for over 13 years, please don't be the cacher that gets it archived by doing any of the above.

Currently, Brain of J. has hidden the cache at Seth Low Pierrepont State Park in Redding, CT. The cache is about a half mile hike along the white trail from the Mountain Road parking lot/trailhead at the park's entrance. The preserve is open from 8 a.m. to sunset year-round. Pets on a lease are permitted. Here's a trail map for your reference. There are at least two caches in the vicinity of Seth Low so come for three-fer.
