Krypton: As there's been no response to my previous note, I assume that the cache is not going to be repaired or replaced, so I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us, and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it

Thanks for your cooperation!

Geocache Description:

6 miles around the island, hang in there

At the turn of the last century, the U.S. Army built a quarantine facility to isolate troops returning from Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. By 1905, some 87,000 soldiers had passed through. In 1910, Fort McDowell was expand into a major facility for receiving recruits and processing military personnel for overseas assignment. Construction included a huge 600-person barracks, a mess hall, and a hospital. During the next few years, this new construction made Fort McDowell the world's largest and most elaborate military induction center [Angel Is. State Park's history page].

The microcache is placed in between the current visitor center building and the 1910 Post Commissary. At the Commissary, soldiers could get every day supplies, like salt and pepper. The cache is a few paces off the pavement.
