I scoped out the trail on google earth before trying it, and it
seemed I could make a run up Otay Mountain into a loop by following
this trail along the back side of Otay Lake and over a ridge and
down into the valley by those caches near the trail head of Otay at
Otay Mesa. So that's what I did. This little mountain doesn't look
too challenging from far away, but coming as it did at mile 18 of
my run, and climbing as it did about 1300' in a little more than
1/2 a mile, it took a little out of me. So that's the masochism
part of this cache.
But, I've also heard that certain geocachers who put caches in
places like this in order to see just who else might climb such a
hill may have a sadistic streak. So that explains the presence of a
cache up here.
You are looking for a camoed play dough container in a rocky
outcrop hanging in a bush very close to the rocks. You can come up
the way I did from near the airfield and have about a 6-7 mile
round trip hike, or come up the hill from the Otay Mesa side and
have a shorter go of it. Some might even attempt it in a 4-wheel
drive vehicle, but it better be a rugged one with an experienced
driver.
