Geocache Description:

Located in the Superstition Mountains, accessed from the North West side, East of Apache Junction, Arizona. Approximately a 4 mile round trip hike.

This is a rigorous day hike trail. Moderately difficult and a good pair of boots is recommended. I rated it as a 3 due to the fact that the terrain approaching the cache is mildly hostile, just about everything sticks or pokes. The paths are semi difficult to follow but there are numerous rock cairns. Marking intermediate waypoints, setting up a track log or leaving a trail of bread crumbs is recommended.

Note: Bring lots of water in the hot months.

The Trailhead for the Massacre Grounds is accessed just off of the First Water Trailhead.

A high clearance vehicle is recommended. Passenger cars can make it but there are free standing rocks, and ruts.

  • Take State Route 88 (Apache Trail) North/North East to Forrest Road 78 (First Water Trail).
  • Turn North East onto Forest Road 78 and follow approx. 0.9 miles to an unmarked road (this is the road for the Massacre Grounds Trailhead).
  • Turn South East onto this road and follow to end.
There is parking at this point (N 33 28.047 W 111 27.433). The Trailhead is located on the South East side of the parking area and proceeds South East. There is a rather prominent peak that will pass you on the right as you follow the path. There are windows in this peak. There are interesting rock formations all along the trail. The path is obvious for about the first 1.5 miles then seems to diverge into several less traveled paths as you gain elevation to get up to the Massacre Grounds. Watch for the rock cairns. There are several elevation changes during the course of this route and you will cross a few small ravines. When approaching the cache a rather large ravine will impede your progress. Don't worry, the cache is on your side. The actual Massacre Grounds is another 0.08 to 0.10 miles past the cache.

The cache container is a small, green ammunition can (standard 7.62 ammo can). The can is labeled "GEOCACHE" along with the coordinates. The cache contains miscellaneous items related to hiking including one MRE of dubious nature. The cache is stashed between a large rock and smaller rock. The cache is not covered and is visible from above.
