Geocache Description:

Visit Abo Ruins virtual cache details at the DGP

Visit the ruins of the Franciscan mission at Abo, dating from the 1620's. This virtual cache is in the Salinas National Monument. It is open everyday of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, from 9 am to 5 pm.

From about 1300 to the 1670s, the Tompiro Pueblo of Abo was one of the Southwest's largest. It was located near Abo Pass, a major east-west trade route.

The community was first visited by Spaniards in 1581. Franciscans built the first church on the site in the late 1620s. An uneasy coexistence between the two cultures lasted through the 1670s, when widespread drought and famine forced the people to abandon the area.

To claim this virtual cache (1) post a photo of someone in your group holding their GPSR in front of the ruins, or (2) send an e-mail to mecoltrin@gmail.com telling me what round landmark you see at the listed coordinates and how it relates to the uneasy coexistence that I mentioned above. (Please do not post your answer here, not even if it is encrypted).

If you are unable to enter the Salinas National Monument grounds, you have one more chance to claim the cache, listed in the hint below.
