This cache is located at the beautiful Mt. Calvert Historical Park. When entering the drive, to the right of the gate is a private home marked with signs, and they sometimes pull the right side of the gate. You may continue straight ahead to the public parking area. The park is open to the public 7 days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This cache is park approved.
Mount Calvert is one of the most significant historical and archaeological sites in Prince George's County. Mount Calvert's rich archaeological and historical resources represent over 8000 years of Native American, Euro-American and African American culture.
In 1658, Phillip Calvert patented Mount Calvert as a 1000-acre plantation. In 1683, An Act for the Advancement of Trade established towns throughout the Chesapeake region to encourage settlement and commerce. Mount Calvert was one such town and eventually became Prince George's first seat of government and was named Charles Town when the county was established in 1696.
Charles Town at Mount Calvert was the center of economic, governmental, and religious activities of Prince George's County until the county seat was moved to Upper Marlboro in 1721. During the middle and late 18th and early 19th centuries, Mount Calvert functioned as a typical southern Maryland plantation. In 1789, John Brown built the existing federal period house.
The park features ongoing archaeological and historical research and provides programs and hands-on activities for the public. Hiking is also permitted and the park offers a small boat ramp for kayaks and canoes. Relic or artifact collecting is strictly prohibited. For more information visit www.pgparks.com.
