Every winter over 50,000 people around the Americas spend a day outside counting birds in their section of the planet at an event called the Christmas Bird Count. This started in 1900 on the east county and has now become the longest running database in ornithology. For the last 6 years one of my sections has been the eastern shores of Grays Harbor and Johns River.
Got an ammo box for Christmas from Grandpa & Grandma 1 so thought it would be fun to place a cache during out count. Unfortunately, as I got to the area a Varied Thrush we were supposed to be counting stole the ammo box and hid it for us. We saw about where it went but had to spend almost 2 hours looking for it. Luckily, for everyone else once we found it we got the coordinates so it won't be so long for others to find it.
It's only 170+ feet from a good off-road parking spot but that's as the crow...errr...thrush flies. You'll have to walk a bit further.
We found this near a high tide so you can get it during any tide but during the winter the area will be drier during low tides.
A warning: There is a short but sturdy wooden bridge you need to cross which could make some dogs or small children nervous.
For those interested, in addition to the Varied Thrush we also saw scoters, widgeon, grebes, and about 9,000 dunlin along that beach today.
