A town long gone
Welcome to Iron Baron, or what is left of it.
Iron Baron was once a thriving mining town run by BHP, fetauring
shops, a school, social club, golf course, swimming pool, hospital
and a sizeable population. All that is left is one house and
resident, a bit of a tennis court and the main road through to Iron
Knob. The remaining house was about the only one not owned and
subsequently sold off by BHP as it was the government owned teacher
house! It is still lived in as a private residence now.
Iron Baron had a proud mining history, being established in 1933
until the mine closure in 1989. The Iron Baron-Iron Prince mines
here yielded some 56 million tonnes of iron ore and nearly 10
million tonnes of low grade 52.5%Fe ore is still stored here at the
mines.
Today Iron baron is a sleepy, beautiful spot with lush arid
lands vegetation, animals and birdlife. Enjoy the spot and don't
forget to cache in and trash out.

August 8 by Bowz2 (245 found) Had an empty afternoon (unusual these days) so decided to seek a few a few caches and as I have been “gunna” come for a drive out here for ages, Today was the day and was worth the drive... Came in from Iron Knob on a nice dirt road to find An empty afternoon found an empty town, Well almost... It appears a few caravaners have taken up residence for a few days so the population has increased substantially. An easy find TFTC
[view this log] | July 7 by Woody Figtree (819 found) Had a few hours spare before my flight out of Whyalla so decided to drive out to this one to tick it off. Simple find and thanks for bringing me out to this ghost town. I cannot imagine living out here myself!
[view this log] | April 19, 2008 by Rocky Glen Grommets (763 found) Interesting township - good clue which helped to locate rather quickly. A very slow train passed by shortly after we stopped which attracted our attention (we had seen it on our way from VPF) Found by Mum Grom. Left car, took ball.
[view this log] | April 11, 2008 by ThisMechaniCan (264 found) ThisMechaniCan's wife here: While ThisMechaniCan was busy with some on-farm work this morning, I strapped the kids in and went for a drive while he played with his tractors and spanners. We travelled down what the GPS said was a road, but it turned out to be a very narrow bumpy track. I was little concerned at one stage that I might not get out - my car doesn't seem to like sand. Got out with a few scratches on the paintwork and nearly took out the diff, who says you need a 4WD? Many Moons ago I came out here and witnessed jousting, sword fighting and other medieval antics. Today, it was cache hunting. After that on the road in (lovely soft sand here too by the way!!), I proceeded up the road to have a quick poke around. Players, you must check out Grandpa's Lookout at 32 59.576 and 137 10.118 (pic). Views fantastic – and as well, when here, you get to see in the local residents back yard (yes, still 1 person here – and yep, that’s their tennis court with fully functional lights). If you want to know what plants will grow without much water, check Grandpa’s garden out in the Baron. At the cords in my log here too. Bougainvillea and other very hard plants a plenty in the old abandoned gardens.... check um out. What I want to know is BHP, or whoever, going to return the hill shapes to their natural form, albit a bit lower Clear skies and thanx Maux Faux from TeamAstro
