Geocache Description:

Ollie Deneyschen (Daspoort) Tunnel

The late councillor A.P. Deneyschen realised in the late sixties that the Iscor-workers staying in Hercules travels a long way to work and suggested to build a tunnel to shorten their journey. The tunnel connected Claremont and Danville to provide easy access and journeys between work and home.

Construction of the tunnel only took 40 months to a cost of R1,7 million and it was officially opened to the public on 10 August 1972 by the Mayor of Pretoria Mr. G.J. Malherbe.

  • Length 573m
  • Width 11.6m
  • Height (Middle 7.5m)  (Ends 13.6m)
  • Ventilation (Vertical shaft in middle of tunnel 4.57m in diameter and 55m between tunnel and top of mountain)
  • Tunnel is designed to handle 6000 vehicles per day.

About the cache:

Please note that we have placed the cache not on the top of the ridge, but out of sight from the top due to signs of muggles staying there from time to time. Please be careful when hiking on mountains in and around Gauteng.

For your convenience we have arranged with the property owner for parking and access to the mountain, thus the reason for placing the first waypoint in his extended garden.

At the listed waypoint, you will find the info to the final cache location (Only the last 5 digits for North and South coordinate) that will also provide safe parking while hiking on the mountain.
