The Old Ridge Route has always been one of my favorite spots in
the Angeles National Forest in which to play. It's unfortunate that
much of it is presently closed due to storm damage, but the closure
does have the advantage of cutting down on traffic. On the brisk
but otherwise gorgeous day on which I hid the cache, I saw no more
than five or six vehicles in three hours. Can't beat that.
So, I decided it would be fun to hide a cache that was a bit
more challenging to reach than the other caches nearby, which are
mostly within a hundred feet or two of the road (not that I'm
complaining, mind you!). This spot looked like it would offer some
great views where one could enjoy a bit of solitude. So, I climbed
and scratched my way up the hill (it's steeper than it looks) from
the Old Ridge Route, only to discover (ARGH!!!!) that I was right
next to another forest road: 7N23.
So, um, the moral of the story: unless you're a masochist or an
idiot, don't try this cache from the Old Ridge Route. Any 2WD with
reasonable clearance should be able to get you there just fine.
Take a minute to enjoy the view while you're up there. I think
you'll find it was worth the long and treacherous climb up the hill
that you didn't make. If that makes sense.
Good luck, and Happy Caching!
