While driving the northern section of the Old Ridge Route, I decided this area needed a cache. You're looking for a 50-caliber ammo can stashed with the usual goodies.

The Old Ridge Route has always been one of my favorite spots in the Angeles National Forest in which to play. It's unfortunate that much of it is presently closed due to storm damage, but the closure does have the advantage of cutting down on traffic. On the brisk but otherwise gorgeous day on which I hid the cache, I saw no more than five or six vehicles in three hours. Can't beat that.

So, I decided it would be fun to hide a cache that was a bit more challenging to reach than the other caches nearby, which are mostly within a hundred feet or two of the road (not that I'm complaining, mind you!). This spot looked like it would offer some great views where one could enjoy a bit of solitude. So, I climbed and scratched my way up the hill (it's steeper than it looks) from the Old Ridge Route, only to discover (ARGH!!!!) that I was right next to another forest road: 7N23.

So, um, the moral of the story: unless you're a masochist or an idiot, don't try this cache from the Old Ridge Route. Any 2WD with reasonable clearance should be able to get you there just fine.

Take a minute to enjoy the view while you're up there. I think you'll find it was worth the long and treacherous climb up the hill that you didn't make. If that makes sense.

Good luck, and Happy Caching!

We really enjoyed this spot, and the hike from the service road was not bad either. The hillside seems to be where we keep all the gophurs in Southern California. Watch your step, they've made the hill pretty soft. We were really happy to find a larger cache! The largest one along the route today! TFTC!

Out for a day of caching, along the Ridge Route, with Majorjarhead and Sky Chick. Great weather, great caches and no DNFs.

The Friday Caching Crew was out for a rare Thursday day of caching. Today, our target was the Old Ridge Route, one of my favorite places. This was one of many caches we found on today. This one took us off the main road quite aways. My opinion of the Prius just went up several notches. Thanks for the hide. TNLNSL.
