The Birds of Lake Osbourne Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

mtmitchellbound: Since the sign for part 2 has been damaged by the hurricanes and Florida sun and most of the birds went north for the summer we are archiving this one. Look for a sequel to this one when the birds return this winter.

Geocache Description:

Take a walk in an urban area with a surprising variety of birds.

This cache involves about a 1 1/2 mile walk on an asphalt path along the shore of Lake Osbourne - ideally in the hour before sunset. Can also be done on bikes or rollerblades. There are alligators in the lake so please heed the no swimming or wading signs. Park closes at sunset.

1. Find the plaque at the above coordinates. Fill in the blank in the north coordinates with the number of men mentioned on the plaque. Fill in the blank in the west coordinates with the last digit in the year J. Duvall McMillan was born.

As you leave the first area look for the wood stork that hangs out in this little cove. You may see a brown Limpkin nearby also. Watch for Anhingas drying their wings or fishing with only their heads and necks appearing above the water. This is where they get their nickname - snakebirds.

2. Check out this sign. How many kinds of Herons are pictured here? Can you spot any of them near by? The Great Blue Heron likes this area.
To get the coordinates for stop 3 fill in the blank in the north coordinate with the number of kinds of fish shown on the sign. Fill in the blank in the west coordinate with the number of kinds of butterflies pictured plus the number of kinds of herons pictured.

4. As you walk towards the final hide listen for the monk parakeets. You will usually hear the parrot like sounds before you spot the small flock of these bright green birds.
The final hide is a clear 35mm film container. Good luck and have fun.
