Geocache Description:

A walk to take in one of the best views over to Cac Carn Beag and Cac Carn Mor.

The problem with hills is that often you can't appreciate them when you're on them! From Meikle Pap you really get a feeling for the scale of Lochnagar. Meikle Pap itself is one of Lochnagar's tops, and is 3215ft (980m) high. This walk is a round trip of around 8 miles with an ascent of about 2000 feet. Allow around 4-5 hours. Stout boots are recommended - although the walk is largely on landrover tracks and paths they're pretty rocky in places, and with shoes (even walking shoes) your ankles could suffer!

Park at the Glen Muick car park (£2 charge) and set off following the signs for the Lochnagar walk. The walk goes across the valley, through a forest and then along a landrover track. After about 2.8 miles leave the track and follow the path down to the left (marked by a cairn). Then follow the path all the way up the col where you'll get your first view of the corrie and cliffs. Head up one of the paths to the right (north).

The cache is obvious if you're standing in the right place. Which sounds a bit daft, but you'll see what we mean. There's no need to move stones, rocks or anything else to get it.

The usual warnings apply to this walk. Even in summer make sure you've got your compass, map, spare batteries, waterproofs, gloves and a hat. We set the cache in mid-June and it was cold! Take plenty of food and water. Let someone know where you're going and let them know when you return. Check the forecast but don't rely on it. Don't do it in winter unless you really know what you're doing. The walk doesn't take you too near to the Lochnagar cliffs, but make sure you're not just following the GPS arrow!

Thanks to Glyn Jones, the Balmoral Estate Ranger, for permission to place.
