Donald Goerke was born in Waukesha on August 8,1926. He graduated from Waukesha High School, Carroll College and received an MBA from the University of Wisconsin. He began his business career as a market researcher for Blatz Brewery. He worked for the Campbell Soup Company from 1965 until 1990. He was the marketing director of the Franco American Division when he and his team came up with SpaghettiOs. He became known as the Daddy-O of SpaghettiOs.
Later in his career at Campbell Soup Company, he created the "Chunky" soup line. He later served as president of Campbell's Champion Valley Farms division that produced Recipe Dog Food, a sponsor of the Lassie television Show.
