Prospect Farm was situated just below Rivington Pike and comprised 14 acres. James and Molly Horsby were farming the property in 1851 and lived with their two children Mary and William aged 7 years and 11 months respectively. In addition to his agricultural responsibilities James acted as a gamekeeper. The Hilton family lived at Prospect Farm about the turn of the century. There is a story that two men called at the farm one day and obtained a cup of tea and light refreshment for a very modest price from Mrs Hilton. Several months later the same two men called again and were charged much more for similar snacks. When querying the increase Mrs Hilton is reported to have replied “I didn’t know who you were last time”. One of the gentlemen callers was apparently W H Lever — Lord Leverhulme. Mr Hilton had a florid complexion and had the nickname ‘Owd Beef. He is supposed to have been the only man known to have a red face in his coffin.
