GrievousAngel: Next time, I'm going to hike, not just eat cake! It was great to see everyone and great to be out on such a beautiful day.

Geocache Description:

Pokey Plodders Potluck Picnic
Let's celebrate summer hiking!

This event is a Meet 'n' Greet--eat, meet other cachers, trade caching stories and TBs. We've had so much fun--and met so many folks--at the first couple of Pokey Plodders events that we want to keep on holding these events and meet more people!

We're holding it on a Friday, 'cause who could resist an event on 8/8/8? The idea is to call in well at work, go hiking along the Mountain Loop Highway--there are easy hikes and hard ones--check the Pokey Plodders thread on the forum for advice and possible hiking partners--and then get together to trade hiking stories. There will be some Pokey Plodders hiking Mount Pilchuck earlier in the day, but, since the trailhead is still snowed in and the lookout is closed because of damage, put this page on your watch list for updates and keep an eye on the Pokey Plodders forum thread.

Families, non-hikers, and new cachers are welcome!
WARNING!

The Ice Caves themselves are inaccessible at the moment (really inaccessible--not just "accessible only by crossing the water on some fallen logs") because of storms, high water and recent (June 28) avalanches.

The picture is by Soup Clan. Read his log (June 18) and see more pictures here. Please do not plan to visit the caves or get the caches near the caves.

ANOTHER WARNING

While some of the hikes in the area are just a pleasant stroll, others are true backcountry hikes. Be sure you're prepared with current information--call the Verlot Public Service Center, 360.691.7791 for up-to-the-minute trail conditions--and the famous Ten Essentials.
Who: Everyone!

What to Bring: Your lunch/dinner, maybe something to share, your TBs and coins to share and trade, your best caching stories and photos--especially from this summer's hikes.

When: Friday, August 8, 2008, 1:00 pm until whenever the intrepid Pilchuck Pokey Plodder group gets down off the mountain. Make sure to sign the event logbook.

Where: Big Four Picnic Area
From the Verlot Public Service Center (11 miles east of Granite Falls), where you can pick up a day pass for $5, travel east on the Mountain Loop Highway for about 14 miles to the Big Four picnic area on the right side of the road. The area has picnic tables, handy parking, a big grassy field and toilets.
Each vehicle will need a National Forest Recreation Pass or Northwest Forest Pass, which you can get online, at the Verlot Ranger Station or from many outdoors shops.
