Geocache Description:

A picturesque stroll between brook and woodland taking in some industrial heritage.

In 1606 Tintern Wireworks was established in Whitebrook, but it wasn’t until the early 18th century that Whitebrook really became a part of the Industrial Revolution. Paper mills, dams, warehouses and workers housing all appeared in the valley taking advantage of the torrent of power that flowed down White Brook and into the Wye. As wallpaper became the latest “must have” fashion accessory the valley grew. African Esparto grass was brought in on boats via Llandogo and later on via the Wye Valley Railway to make high quality paper.

By 1880 it was all over and today Whitebrook has returned to a beautiful, sleepy hamlet, though there are many reminders of it's industrial past for those who care to look.

Foodies may be interested to know that The Crown at Whitebrook was the only restaurant in the whole of Wales to hold a coveted Michelin star at the time of publication. After going out of business in March 2013 and the restaurant re-opened in October 2013 as The Whitebrook with a new chef/owner and has since been awarded a Michelin star again.

The listed coordinates are for parking. If none is available here anywhere to the west, up to the Crown won't make your trip any longer.
