Geocache Description:

A short 3km drive from A1 near Nowa Nowa

The stony creek trestle bridge was built in 1916 when the existing
Melbourne to Bairnsdale line was extended to Orbost. This 97 km
extension through rugged terrain was reputed to have been the most
difficult rail project undertaken in Victoria The bridge remained
in service for over 60 years up until a bushfire damaged it in
1980. The last train crossed the bridge in 1988. At 247 meters long
and 20 meters high, the bridge is the largest one of its kind
standing in the state. Built of Red Ironbark and Grey Box timber,
it is a fine example of the early engineering skills that made do
with the resources and materials found on site.
There are picnic table and toilets onsite. The
turn off is sign posted in the A1. The bridge is not
accessable for pedrestrains due to safety reasons but forms
part of the Bairnsdale to Orbost rail trail. Please replace
exactly where you found it and be careful of muggles. Although
it is off the main highway the time I was ther 3 other car
loads of people were there.
