Permission has been given by the Ohio State Parks for
this geocache
This location was the spot where I placed my first
Geocache back in 2002. After some time I believe it got washed
away, and I archived it. I finally decided I needed to place
another one here. The original location was about 100 feet from
where the cache is today.
The cache was named because there is a Bald Eagle nest not too
far away, and at the time it was the only one in Delaware County. I
placed it here to highlight that, plus I wanted something with a
challenging hike, and some decent views.
If you visit this cache you will find there are no real trails
to get you to the cache. If you pay close attention you might be
able to follow trails made by fisherpeople, and deer paths. You
will very likely run into thorns, nettles, poison ivy, logs hidden
in the underbrush, ticks, snakes and other critters.
Also be careful during the various hunting seasons. It might be a
good idea to wear blaze orange during these times as this is a
legal hunting area.
Parking can be found easily at two locations. The first is at
the below dam area which gives you about a 1/2 mile or more, one
way, hike. This area is located at N 40° 21.520 W 083° 04.325. This
parking area closes at 9:30pm. The other location is located off of
Panhandle Road. just north of the dike at N 40° 21.586 W 083°
03.251. This area, like the area of the cache is open until 11pm.
This is a longer hike, but I've never measured it to see how far it
is.
The Bald Eagle nest can be found by parking at the
aforementioned spot on Panhandle Road, and walking east on top of
the dike. The nest is located about 1/4 mile away in the top of a
tree that stands pretty much alone on the south side of the dike.
They don't always nest here, so you may not see anything. Also
during certain times of the year, when they are more sensitive to
people, the area will be off limits as marked by signs near the
parking area.
