Geocache Description:

welcome bikers

** NOTE** The park is going to be closed in the morning to traffic due to the other event taking place. You are to tell them that you are going to the other shelter house for that event. The employee told me today that he would make sure people got there.

It’s A Picnic/Hike And Bike Caching Event

When: May 22 @ 11:00 am until ?
Where: Independence Dam State Park
Defiance ,Ohio
Clevenger Shelter House

Welcome everyone, bring your mountain bikes and hiking boots.

The event will start at 11:00 a.m. with a picnic at the IDSP. Following lunch you are welcome to head out at any time to find the caches hidden along the unpaved tow path trail. The cache trail starts at the West end of the park and goes East past Florida, Ohio. I highly recommend bringing a mountain bike for this event as the trail is a bit rough in areas.

The event itself is a smiley but the caching trail is a total of 7.75 miles with 27 caches along it.

Leg 1 consists of 5.25 miles of hiking/biking and has 15 traditional, 1 mystery, 1 multi and 1 event cache. 2.5 miles are accessible with the use of a road bike. The canal trail is fairly flat and consists of dirt and little stone at the start of it. I would rate the terrain for this section a 2.

Leg 2 is 2.5 miles in length and has 9 traditional, and 1 mystery cache. The towpath trail is pretty level from Florida to the lock. From the lock to Girty's Island it is rough and lots of hills. It is completely accessible to bikes. I would rate the terrain for that section a 3 or 3.5. Just off the path you can grab another traditional at the cemetery in Florida. There are 90 caches within 8 miles of the entrance to the Sate Park so you can make a day of it here.

Parking can be found at 3 locations for those who want to drive and park. There are lots of places at the dam to park, Florida bridge and Near Leaking Lock on 424.

Please post in your log what you are bringing for the picnic. There is no cost for this event. If you choose to NOT do the picnic and do the trail caches that is fine too, just be sure to sign in to get credit for the event. I will be handing out a personalized event item to everyone who attends for this event as well.

This event will be held rain or shine due to reservation costs to me.

I will be providing hot dogs and hamburgers and will start grilling just after 10:45 a.m.
