RIP #2: Cactus Record Store
The RIP geocache series is dedicated to help us remember places and institutions gone from the Houston scene.
There is no need to visit the geocaches in order nor in one day. They are here for us to enjoy.
Cactus Records and Tapes began in 1976 and quickly became the favorite record store in town because of its wide selection of music and the knowledgeable staff. Thirty years later, the music died! Cactus Records closed its doors for good in the summer of 2006.
I worked for Cactus for six months in 1979, when I desperately needed a job. Usually, you had to know someone or have knowledge of a unique genre of music to get hired. I bluffed my way into a job by saying that I knew classical music. As soon as I was hired, I read the back of every classical record that I could get my hands on.
During my time at the store I was fortunate to meet Marvin Gaye, Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and a local favorite, Shake Russell.
Whenever we were bored (which was often), we would make prank phone calls to other record stores. My favorite prank was to ask the other store if they had any Marcel Marceau records.
“Hold please!”
Every Friday and Saturday, the Alabama Theater (which deserves its own RIP geocache) would show “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at midnight. As the bewitching hour approached, the Rocky Horror crowd, most in character costume, would mingle in the store.
Cactus held a private party for former employees the night after it closed for the last time. I was disappointed that no one else from my era was there. I was the only one who still had the original Cactus Records and Tapes employee badge.
The cache: The usual parking lot micro cache. No room for anything but the log scroll. BYO pen.
