Geocache Description:

The cache is located on the Ko`olau Summit about 1/2 ways between the the ends of the east and west ridges. From the end of either ridge you should reach the cache in about 1/2 hour. A round trip should take about 5 hours. Check the very first log for a link to a good map.

After doing the “Double Dog Dare You” cache and not finding it, I decided to do a TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU cache. And here it is. Once you get to the coordinates you will have no trouble finding it. I’ll rate it a 1 Star to find, but to get there from the west I’ll give it a real 5 Star. From the east only a 4.5 if you turn around at the cache and go back the way you came. If you do a loop it will also be a 5 Star hike.

The cache was to have been placed on Pu`u O Kona, but because of “white out” conditions today I misjudged where I was. You may also find yourself in white out conditions where you can only see 50 to 100 feet ahead of you. BEWARE and don’t do anything stupid. This is supposed to be FUN!!!! Pu`u O Kona is a high peak at the back of Kuliouou Valley. You can get there two ways; either will test your fear of heights to the max. Unlike Team GeoBlast I’ll even give you a map to the location with your choose of two routes.

Route 1- Follow the trail marked on the map which was pretty well cleared and ribboned as of January 2010 to the crest of the West Kuliouou ridge. This is the hard way!!! Follow the ridge to the Ko`olau Summit and turn right following your GPS and the now clear trail right to the cache. You WILL encounter steep drops on the windward side and muddy/slippery ups and downs along the summit. You can make a loop out of this by keep going along the summit for another ½ hour to the end of the State Kuliouou trail and follow it down and back to your car.

Route 2-Follow the State of Hawai`i, Kuliouou Trail to the end. Then turning to your left continue along the Ko`olau Summit Trail for about ½ hour to the cache. You will still face steep drops to the windward side and a number of ups and downs which can be muddy and slippery before you reach the cache. You can then continue to the end of Kuliouou West Ridge and follow it down and back to your car.

Either way you will be faced with steep drops on the windward side of the summit. The cache is about ½ ways between the end of the east and west Kuliouou ridges. It will be easier to go from the east side. Easier, but NOT EASY. As the name of the cache states, I Triple Dog Dare you to do the loop from the west to the east! Come on you’re not afraid of HEIGHTS are you? Tomorrow is Halloween but that shouldn’t scare you either.
