Fort Ord Dunes State Park is located on four miles of Monterey Bay
shoreline. The area is open and relatively undeveloped, but has a
military history as a small arms training ground. Over 100
abandoned buildings and military remnants are scattered throughout
the African ice plant-covered dunes. Because the park has not yet
officially opened, access is limited. However, parking and entry
are currently available on the corner of 1st Avenue and 1st Street
just east of Highway 1.
This cache series will allow you to hike the roads and tracks of
the park while watching for those "what is that doing here?" spots.
And keep your eyes open for those numbers!
CACHE DETAILS
With the main entry tunnel spruced up for the official opening of
the park, local graffiti artists have moved their workspaces to the
darkened interior of 9, 11. From the cache site, you will have an
excellent view of the everchanging canvas.
The container is a clear plastic Lock & Lock box filled with
small trade items and a log. Please bring your own pen to sign the
log. Because this cache is in a potentially well-traveled area,
please take care to rehide carefully.
UPDATE: In March 2009, the park officially opened. Hours are
8:00 to a half hour after sunset daily. Admission is free. Parking
is available by taking 1st Avenue to the 8th Street bridge--follow
the signs.
