Geocache Description:

About 15 miles north east of Monroeville Al in the community of Tunnel Springs is a old Train Tunnel that was long ago abandoned. . You need to be able to walk about 1/2 mile down the tracks to reach the cache. Park your car at these coordinates:
N31 40.338` W087 13.352

Built with simple equipment, four crews worked on the tunnel night and day.
There were 15 men to the crew. One crew worked from the north and another from the south. When the 840 foot tunnel was completed in 1899, it was only 1/2 inch off the center line.

Cache is NOT in the tunnel and you won`t have to walk through it to reach the cache.
The tunnel is now home to many small bats. Take a powerfull flashlight and see if you can spot them! The bats will be hanging from the ceiling with wings wrapped around their bodies. They are not much bigger than your thumb. Listen for the strange sounds they make. Is that the sound of CHEWING???
Important! if you visit in the winter, PLEASE be VERY careful NOT to disturb the bats because they are in hibernation, and if you wake them, they'll starve because they won't be able to find any insects to eat.

The tunnel has a slight bend to the right, so to see the " Light at the end of the tunnel" you`ll have to walk down the tunnel a bit. There`s nothing to be scared of,,,,,,, at least nothing the last time I was in there!
The cache is a ammo can FULL of nice things. A great cache for a terrific location, so bring something nice to trade. Also, when you drive out, continue on the dirt road(it will take you back to the pavement towards Monroeville) and view the tunnel from the ridge above. Get out and search the boulders along side the road for fossils. Each side of this road is private property so be respectful of that PLEASE! I will include a picture of a fossil we found.
Also, there is another cache hidden by Kiwi located at the Monroe County Courthouse Museum. Be sure to visit the museum and pick up some brochures listing other historic attractions located nearby, and leave a donation to the museum if you can.
