Geocache Description:

This geocache is designed to take the cacher on a tour of Cooperstown New York. There are ten stops on this tour. At each stop you will have a task in the form of a question to answer. Use the spaces below to record your answers to these questions.

***CAUTION***

For your own safety if you are searching for clues in the vacinity of the lake please be aware THE LAKE TENDS TO FREEZE OVER IN WINTER AND YOU MAY NOT BE WALKING ON LAND!!!! You may be walking on thin ice -and you don't want to do that. Use caution! Be sure of where you step!

This cache was disabled because of a report that there was a snake, which might possibly be poisonous, near the cache. It appears that I put the cache near a rocky outcropping perfect for a snake to den and hybernate in for the winter. I have since moved the cache to where I hope there will be less of a chance to encounter a snake. Never-the-less I would recommend that caution be used when looking for the caches in this multi and, although it is unlikely you'd come across one, I'd advise you to remain alert to the fact that snakes may be in the area.

Cooperstown New York is a town with a well preserved history. As you do this multi you will travel around the town to various buildings built during an earlier time when the likes of noted author James Fenimore Cooper lived here.

The tour covers about nine blocks and may take one to two hours to complete. It can be a little bit of a walk. This tour is especially well suited for bicycles. Bicycles can be rented at the Cooperstown Bicycle Works.

Parking for the first cache is at N 42.41.985 W 074.56.032. The road by the lot is one way. Be sure to enter the parking lot from the other side.

The posted cache coordinates will take you to a location where you will find a large tin containing tour booklets. These tour booklets are not water proof so please do NOT remove them from their plastic sleeves and be sure to RECLOSE THE TOP TO THE CONTAINER TIGHTLY!

Drive (or walk (puff, puff)) to the downtown area of Main Street to begin your tour. If you come during the summer when parking may be limited and can't find a place to park you may wish to try parking at N 42.41.550 W074.55.947 and take the trolley to the red parking lot. The last time I checked the trolley cost $3 for the day.

You will need several things to complete this cache. You will need a pen or pencil and a printout of this cache page to record your answers to the questions at each stop. You may also wish to have another piece of paper for jotting down your calculations for locating the cache.

Please be sure to replace the lids on the caches tightly. There can be lots of tourists around so please rehide containers so they won't be seen. Record your answers below for the question posed at each stop.

L= Add the answer for clue #1 plus the answer for clue #2 plus the answer for clue #9 plus the answer for clue #6. Subtract that total from the answer for clue #8.
M= The answer for clue #7.
N= The answer for clue #10 multiplied by two.

We hope that you will enjoy this history tour even if you fail to find the cache. Good Luck.
Snow greatly increases the difficulty for locating the cache.

Please place the final cache behind the tree so that it doesn't roll down the incline and become exposed when you rehide it.

***Notice***
The date mentioned in clue number four is located at the top of the plaque.

The answer to clue number nine may be hard/ impossible to locate in the winter when it is buried under the snow. You can find the answer for the question in some books on local history (check with the librarian) at the library which is located on the corner across from the Hall of Fame.

July 10, 2009- I was walking through town today and noticed the building mentioned in clue number seven might be a little hard to see because the owner has recently erected a very large hedge around it .

Update- a new sign is in use concerning the buoys on the lake. An extra buoy has since been added to the sign (Otesaga). For the correct answer you will need to subtract this buoy from the others.
Cache hunt might be a little tiresome for young children.

You can check your answers for this puzzle on Geochecker.com.

Choosing to do this cache is at your own risk.

Cache is NOT in stone wall.
