Geocache Description:

The Loon Capital - Mercer, Wisconsin. "When you hear the cry of the loon, you know you are in the Northwoods!" You are looking for a 35mm film canister with only a log in it.

2CachingLoons (AKA: PokerPlayingEMT-&a-BookWormQueen) have found their king...or is it our queen? You be the judge! LOL! In honor of discovering our Royal Majesty, we have placed a cache so that others may come and pay homage to this awesome Loon. Introducing Clair D'Loon, the world's 3rd largest loon...A 16ft tall, 2000 lb loon greets visitors to Mercer, WI. The big bird settled in Mercer in 1981. The bird is constructed of solid foam core with a fiberglass covering and stands on a solid cement base. The Mercer Chamber of Commerce spearheaded the project of becoming the Loon Capital, and with the help of many people, raised $10,000 to have the statue made and create a mini-park with picnic tables in a lovely pine grove with a stream and the new information building for all visitors to enjoy. The statue is a permanent tribute to one of nature's most beautiful and unusual birds. The Common Loon is a unique feature of Wisconsin's enchanting north country. It is also a bird in trouble, struggling to survive amid growing numbers of water recreationalists. The lakes of Iron County are one of it's last breeding areas in the United States. Enjoy their beauty and unique calls at a distance, so this wild and beautiful bird can continue to delight and fascinate everyone for years to come! Please bring a pen or pencil to sign the log. It has come to our attention that some seekers appear to be moving the big rocks to locate the cache. Please be careful, so that Geocaching sport and all of us geocachers do not get a bad rep. The cache can be found without moving any of the large rocks. Thank you for being considerate to the property when searching for this cache.
