| The SALZACH RIVER
GRAVEL are small pieces of rounded stone, usually no
larger than a large coin, of a various colors. It is named for the
effect of many years of rounding of the edges due to a flow of
water over it. |
|
The Salzach River
area:
The Salzach has its source in the Kitzbüheler Alps, more precisely
in the
area of the Salzachgeier north of the Gerlos Pass at an altitude
of 2,300 metres. After flowing downhill for some 226 kilometres it
converges with the River Inn near Braunau.
The Salzach flows in a west-east direction from its headwater
region down to Schwarzach, where it changes its course northwards.
In the section from Bergheim to Braunau, the river marks the
Austrian border with Germany. Being a typical glacier-fed mountain
river, the Salzach carries most water between May and August, when
snow and glacier ice are melting in the Alps. From its wellspring
to the point where it flows into the Inn, the Salzach descends
almost 2,000 metres. On its way, it collects the waters of a
catchment area of some 6,727 square kilometres. It drains
about 75% of the total area of the federal province of Salzburg.
Its main tributaries are the mountain brooks coming down from the
Hohe Tauern, the rivers Lammer, Königsseeache and Saalach.
