Located along the historic Old Ridge Route, this monolith was once
one of the most photographed sites along the Ridge Route. Please
watch your step while locating the cache as a wrong step could be a
long step!
This cache is located in the Angeles National Forest so please have
your Adventure Pass displayed for all to see (Note 02/04/09:
According to www.ridgeroute.com site an Adventure Pass is no longer
required).
The Granite Gate today is marked by the large rock situated to
the west. The rock is actually sandstone and not really granite. At
one time prior to shaving the cliff to the east, the road veered
closer to the monolith giving the appearance of a passage or
"GATE". If you are continuing southbound (if not, well, TURN
AROUND) approximately 1/2 mile south you will come upon Horseshoe
Bend. Upon close inspection of the road, you will notice that the
roadway at one time proceeded further into the cup of the
horseshoe. Both of these sites were very popular with postcard
companies of the day. (Also both of these sites are easier to find
if traveling south on the Ridge Route).
