Brennbergbánya (Brennberg-mine), oldest coal-mine of Hungary is situated at the westernmost edge of Sopron-mountains, right at the Austrian border. Is was a matter of mere chance that coal was found in the region. In 1752 on a cold, foggy autumn morning a shepherd lit his camp-fire, which set aflame a coal outcrop. The shepherd reported the case to the major of nearby Sopron, who examined the case and the mine was opened. The place where coal had caught fire was named "Brennende Berg" (in German), that is where the village's name comes from. After 200 years of mining the pits were closed and the small village slowly began to decline. One can still find the pitheads, pit-pony stalls, remains of mine-tramway and of course the unique miner's pub built together with the miner's church. During the years of communism the settlement was a sort of enclosure due to the vicinity of Austrian border. This isolation however preserved natural beauty and richness of native flora and fauna. Several protected plant, insect and bird species can be found in the surrounding forests.
The cache is found in a standard tupperware box under a huge concrete block. In the nearby you also find a watchout tower.
