Geocache Description:

Although it is possible to cycle or even drive most of the way to this cache, the last half mile involves a steep ascent on rough ground to a height of almost 500m above sea level, so not as easy as it may look.

This cache contains a small supply of pre-decimalisation sixpenny coins (please take one per visitor), and a few other goodies.

From Inverness drive north on the Ullapool road until just past Contin. Turn left to Achilty and keep going until you reach Luichart Power Station. Immediately past it bear right and a few hundred yards further on park at N57 34.720 W004 41.702 (just below the house with all the husky dogs in the garden).

From there walk or cycle up to Luichart Dam, cross the dam and go past a pile of old metal screens before turning hard left up the hill on a rough path (up until this point you could have cycled with ease). Follow the path through an area of bracken (which used to be excellent grazing a few years ago) for a couple of hundred yards or so past a ruin up to the right, and look for a fence going right steeply uphill and around some crags. Leave the path and follow the fence all the way up to the saddle (steep and rough). At this point make a short detour to your right onto one of the finest (and least well known) iron age hill forts in the highlands (N57 35.071 W004 42.406) - great views to the east. Then back to the sadlle and on uphill for a short distance, following your GPS until you find a large flat stone. Look underneath it.

Having done all that you may as well go on up and west to enjoy a really great wee ridge of hills with spectacular views into the wilds of Wester Ross. Sgurr Marcasaidh is the highest point as 580m. There are a couple of good trout lochs as well, and good wild camping if you want to make an overnight trip out of it. You can return by the track down Glen Marcasaidh or back along the ridge.

Have fun.
