This being my first cache I wanted to do something very special. This cache should prove to be a fun challenge for all who attempt it. Protected on 3 sides by thick swamp and on the fourth by a small river, it is only accessable by the water. The stream leading up to is should prove a challenge as well, as it will require a little finese with a canoe and paddle to navigate the winding and narrow water way. Also be sure to bring bug spray, you'll need it.
To gain access to this little adventure you are going to need to go by way of canoe or kayak. If your really brave you can get there by land, but thick swamp and heavy undergrowth and thorns make that a very long and messy and dangerous trek. You can launch from Old Springfield Rd at N42°17'484 W072°38'455. Or if your up for a little bit more of an adventure, launch at the boat ramp off Rt. 5 (N42°17'277, W072°37'103) and go under the bridge at Old Springfield Rd. (It's a low overhead, but plenty of room providing the water level isn't greatly above normal). If the water level is too far below normal, you may not be able to get access to the cache as the river gets quite shallow at points. Wading across the river is not advisable as the water has leechs and huge snapping turtles
Once on the water, if your quiet and lucky you may see a Blue Heron flying over head. Some of them nest around Hulberts Pond. If your in no hurry you can make land at the bird watching tower on the pond and observe for a while. You can't miss it, it's the treehouse. Despite apperence, the tower is quite stable and safe.
First and formost, this cache is located just across the river from the Arcadia Wildlife Preserve, so once you make landfall, please tread lightly and CITO. The name of the cache comes from a rare plant that grows in the area during the spring, the Jack in the Pulpit. If you are fortunate enough to see this plant please do not pick it.
I've been doing research to see what the bridge used to be and when it was taken down, but it's proving quite difficult. Something about it will find it's way up eventually.
