The cache is located at an elevation of 1548m (5078 ft), on
the way to Mt. Thurston (nope, it's not the summit, but the cache
location offers better views). The trail to get to the cache is a
part of a popular hike involving the tandem of Elk and Thurston
Mtns. You will likely "grind" your way up Elk Mountain first. While
at Elk, you will want to find
Mountain Top Philosophy by Chillibusher. The terrain is steep
and takes approximately 2 hours to reach the top of Elk Mtn. Once
there, it will take approximately another hour to reach Mt.
Thurston following the ridgeline trail.
Overall, you will climb 769 m (2527 ft) from the parking lot
at the bottom to where the rock cairn and the cache is hidden.
There is lots to see while up here including Mt. Baker, the Lucky
Four group, Mt. Slesse, a hang-gliding jump point (I wouldn't want
to pack all that stuff to the jump point!), and stunning views of
the Fraser Valley.
Plan on bringing plenty of water, food, hiking gear and be
prepared. Seasonally, there are also wild strawberries on Elk on
the way over. Tasty, but they won't make a meal! The cache is a 1 L
Lock'N'Lock with some special things in it including an FTF
certificate, a compass, Colorado Geocoin, NeoPet, minicarabiners,
and a bear bell (you can't be too sure!)
Props go to Chillibusher and Geo-Jakers for
accompanying me on the cache. It was a "goal" of mine to place one
here and finer company no one has ever had on this hike!
