Park at the Malibu Creek State Park area ($2). You can camp
overnight here too. This hike is fairly easy (4.6 miles
round-trip). Be sure you've got plenty of water. Proceed to the
M*A*S*H set site (the trail is fairly well marked). If you take the
right fork early on, you'll bypass the visitor center. If you take
the left fork over a crumbling concrete stream ford, you'll wind up
at the visitor center. Pass the visitor center and cross the
bridge. There is a short uphill climb to Century Lake. The rest of
the trail is level.
The first half is dirt road (Crags Road) until you reach the
concrete bridge. Beyond the concrete bridge, the trail becomes
rougher. There are usually horseback riders, scout troops, and
other hikers on the trail.
The cache is a small ammo can with gold lettering. Initial
contents are most of the items I've retrieved from other caches.
There are a few cars, a deck of cards, a light-stick, and some
squeezey balls.
In the area are a burned out Jeep and an ambulance.
Note: I've tried to approach this location from the west but
there's no place to park. I think you can park at the Park
Headquarters which is off Mulholland but I'm not familiar with this
trail.
If you listen carefully, you can here a classic raptor-type bird
call. Is it an eagle or a falcon or something else? If you know
what it is, please post it.
2/15/03 - Replaced the camera with a flash one for the lunatics
visiting the cache at night. Last week's rain did a number on the
trail from the bridge to the site. It's pretty muddy but navigable.
A gaggle of Sierra Clubbers was passing through just as I was
working on the cache. Some seemed quite interested in the
geocaching concept. Hopefully they will leave it undisturbed.
12/6/03 - Replaced and moved the cache. Apparently the initial
location was too easy to stumble on. The cache is now in a
tan/od-green ammo can and is in a slightly different spot that you
have to specifically go to. I suggest that you try to keep
non-cachers from seeing you looking for it just in case.
