Since what's known as the June 27, 2014 lava flow, alternate routes were necessary to be opened to allow access to the Puna community. The lava flow (to date) has only claimed one unfortunate home before it stalled. Our Mayor Billy Kenoi saw the need to have access and ordered this route to be cleared. Prior to the lava flow, it was mainly used as a hiking trail, now it's able to allow 2 way traffic.
