Dès le IIIe siècle, Bayeux se dote d’une enceinte fortifiée pour se protéger des raids barbares. La fortification ne sera progressivement démantelée qu’au cours du XVIIIe siècle. La tour de l’angle nord-ouest est le seul vestige encore en place de nos jours. Bien que remaniée, la structure médiévale est encore parfaitement identifiable.

From the IIIth century, Bayeux is equipped with a surrounding wall strengthened to protect itself from barbaric raids. The fortification will be gradually dismantled only during the XVIIIth century. The tower of the northwest angle is the only vestige still in place nowadays. Although reshaped, the medieval structure is still perfectly recognizable.
