"Kanda water supply" had been used as getting water [shi] and water service in Edo before.

Former name of the Kanda river said, "Hirakawa", and was a river poured into the Hibiya creek where it had entered the south sink and present Marunouchi and Hibiya from the vicinity of the branch point of a present Nihonbashi river. At that time, this Hirakawa was a boundary of the Toyoshima county and the [**gen] county.

>
Insertion prefecture [shita] Ieyasu Tokugawa repaired Hirakawa to secure the drinking water of Edo where the fresh water was not able to be obtained with the well satisfactorily in the beach, and maintained the Kanda water supply that made the Inokashira pond, [yo**teraike], and the queer positive temple pond a head of a river to Edo in 1590(positive 18-heaven year). Going out of the Inokashira pond by this repair, the confluence to [yo**] Terakawa and queer [seiterakawa], and the style parts became present appearances, and the Kanda water supply supplied water from the main stream in the river to amount of sink [te] Koishikawa and Hongo by Mejiro. Moreover, to flow to the duct that it dug and road 3 penetrates to new [to] through the excavated Edo style island (outer moat) that ran to Sumidagawa in the duct in the Hirakawa downstream as flood control measures back, it repaired. Among these, after the Meiji era, it dug, half [no] the west and the outer moat were buried, and the river channel in a present Nihonbashi river was approved to road 3.

It was planned to do for Hirakawa to moat about nature to harden the defense of Tohoku in the Edo castle, and [ta] style road was put up east and the substituted construction was done in the age of two Brigadier General [guntokugawa] [**chuu] the south sink from Koishikawa. Digging up this was divided because the plateau that was called a Kanda stand had expanded from Hongo in this construction ..the eastern from Suidobashi.., it passed, and an artificial valley was made in present Ochanomizu. It was made to join Sumidagawa east of Asakusabashi and the willow bridge from the Kanda stand to due east by using the river that was from the origin east of the Kanda stand. Former river channel of Hirakawa becomes a moat in the Edo castle being separated by this repair, and Hirakawa who came to flow east comes to be called "Kanda river". Suidobashi was built across the west of roadside canals of the Kanda stand, and it came to be able to supply the Kanda water supply to Nihonbashi. The old Hirakawa river channel and the Kanda river in Nihonbashi tie again, and are Nihonbashi rivers in the back.
