Pocahontas
State Park, Shelter #5
10:00am until whenever
Parking fee of $4 for day visitors on Saturday
This year the CVGA crew is headed south of the river to celebrate
geocaching within the beautiful confines of Pocahontas State Park.
We've reserved Shelters #5 and #6 for Saturday, June 10, 2006 to
hold the third Richmond Rally geocaching event. It's another chance
to put a face to all those names you see in the logs or on the
forums and meet some new folks as well! We've got the shelter until
sunset and plan to kick things off at around 10:00am.
We'll be running the grill from 11:30am until probably about
12:30pm and welcome any food contributions our fellow cachers want
to bring with them! The organizers will be providing the main
course--hotdogs and hamburgers along with condiments and utensils.
The shelter is in a moderately shaded area and has parking and
restrooms close by. There's also a small stream only a short walk
away that's well suited for novice or young anglers if you have any
fishing enthusiasts in your group.
Check back for a more detailed schedule to come out in the
coming weeks but you can count on a big group lunch, travel bug and
geocoin trading, a few geocaching classes throughout the day, some
doorprizes, and maybe even a couple of surprises!
If you can make it, please post a 'Will Attend' log to let us
know so we can get a ballpark number for attendance. If you can to
bring any items (sodas, hotdog buns, paper plates, etc.) give us a
heads-up in the note as well so we can plan appropriately. Also, if
you would like to help out with event planning (food, classes,
setup, logisitics) please contact Steve (the 'ste' in stepol) at
sehutchinson@gmail.com.
There's already about 20 existing caches in the park and on June
10th there will be 15 more in the park and another 10-12 new caches
in the area around the park for you to find! Check out the bookmark
list "Pocahontas State Park" for caches (both old and new) within
the park and "Richmond Rally 3" for a list of new caches placed in
the area for the event.
Again, be sure to check back often as the details firm up!
PARKING INFORMATION
The parking fee is $4 per car for day visitors on Saturday.
Parking is included (for 2 vehicles) with camping fees. Parking
fees are required anytime you park a car at Pocahontas State Park -
whether you go into the main park area or not. There are a couple
of drop boxes in the larger parking areas or you can pick up a
parking pass at the main entrance.
The State of Virginia has various annual and
lifetime passes that frequent visitors may be interested in.
Also, as Code_Zero has pointed out to our group, Friends of
Pocahontas State Park volunteers can earn a yearly parking pass
with volunteer hours.
CAMPING INFORMATION
Thanks to the efforts of our resident Pocahontas insider,
Code_Zero, we have a number of camping spaces reserved for
Geocachers attending the event. When making reservations please
call the central reservations number at 1-800-933-PARK and
tell them to add that you are attending the Geocaching event. The
central office relies on the park to assign specific spots and
Pocahantas is holding a loop open for us in which they will place
reservations marked as being associated with the event.
SWIMMING INFORMATION
Pocahontas State Park's Pool and Aquatic Recreation Center is open
from 10:00am to 7:00pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Cachers who are
camping enjoy one day of free swimming for each night of overnight
camping. The park has generously offered all other cachers to use
the pool for the group rate of $3 per person. A great way to cool
off after a hard day in the woods.
MUSEUM INFORMATION
Both the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum and the Nature
Center will be open on Satuday during the event. Feel free to drop
by and learn a little bit more about the young men who lived here
while they developed the Swift Creek Recreation Area in the 1930s
and the creatures who live here today!
