Geocache Description:


This is a quick grab that is outside a museum in Weston, VT. If you hunt for this one, take a moment to stop in the local museums and take a look around.

Weston is a delightful little town and The Farrar-Mansur House Museum is a beautiful old place and filled with colonial heirlooms. Adjacent to the museum are the Old Mill and the Craft Building, which houses the 1890-vintage bandwagon of the Weston Cornet Band.

Both museums are open for tours and demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from July 3, 2010 through October 10, 2010 and on Wednesday afternoons through September 1, 2010.

Originally built in 1795 as a home and tavern by Captain Oliver Farrar, the Federal style house now displays collections of portraits, household items, clocks, dolls, costumes, textiles, guns, band instruments, weaving and spinning equipment. All items are gifts from Weston families. The Old Mill, built in 1780 as a sawmill, now contains a functioning gristmill, one of very few in the Northeast capable of operating by waterpower, plus an outstanding collection of old tools dating from 1785 to 1940. There are also items used by tinsmiths, sawyers, coopers, weavers, and farmers.

The three museums are the centerpiece of Weston’s Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Although the cache is dog/wheelchair friendly, I don't think dogs are allowed inside the buildings.
