The U.S. Coast Guard Through History

1790
4, August-President George Washington signed the Tariff Act that authorized the construction of ten vessels, referred to as "Cutters" to enforce federal Tariff and Trade Laws.

1915
The Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life Saving Service and became the U.S. Coast Guard.

1939
President Franklin Roosevelt transferred the Light House Service to the Coast Guard, putting it in charge of Maritime Navigation.

1946
Congress transferred Merchant Marine Licensing and vessel safety to the Coast Guard.

1967
The Coast Guard is transferred to the Department of Transportation.

2003
The Coast Guard is transferred again, this time to the Department of Homeland Security, where it currently serves.

Today
The Coast Guard enforces the nations laws at sea, protects the marine environment, guards the nations coast line and all ports, and provides vital life saving services.

In time of war or at the Presidents orders
The U.S. Coast Guard serves as part of the U.S. Navy.
